Musical/Movie Project Week 23

 Musical Monday - Once on this Island (1990)

So, I had heard a lot about this one and I think I expected too much.  It was fine, but I really didn't get excited by any of it.  The story was a little strange and the music didn't impress me.  If I'm being honest, I've never cared a lot for shows performed on a circle stage.

Tune Tuesday - South Pacific (1958)

I'm pretty sure I've seen this one by a local high school production, and I thought I enjoyed it.  Unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed with the movie.  If I'm being honest the most memorable song for me is "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of my Hair" and while revisiting this show I've come to the conclusion that even that one isn't that great.

Wayback Wednesday - Once Upon a Time in the West (1969)

I didn't get to this one this week, but looking ahead I don't have anything on the schedule for next week.  I think maybe I caught a mistake where I had a movie on the list twice and I just erased the multiple but never filled the spot.  So, I think I'll try this one again next week.

Throwback Thursday - Free Willy (1993)

As a kid, I thought this movie was really good.  However, I have to admit this is one that I haven't really watched since I was a kid.  I guess that should have been my first clue that it wasn't an amazing movie.  I will say though, it was enjoyable enough to watch again.

Friday First - Pirates of Penzance (1983)

This musical came onto my radar in college when some of my fellow students talked about it on more than one occasion.  Well, I must say I started this movie twice and I tried getting all the way through it, but after needing to stop watching the second time I just didn't have any motivation to finish it.  I don't know if I'm just in a movie slump right now or if it's because my kids are home all day long driving me crazy every day, but I wasn't enjoying this movie either.

Seasonal Saturday - Pirates of the Caribbean (2003)

I liked this movie from the moment it was released.  I do think the series got a little crazier with each film, but I still stand by this one.  On this viewing, I was watching with LittleCJC and it was fun sharing this film with her.  Unfortunately, she did loose interest before the end of the movie.

Disney Diner - Moana (2016)

Musical/Movie Project Week 22

 Company (1970)

This one had some comical moments, and the soundtrack was enjoyable.  However, I'm not going to find myself singing any of these songs any time soon.  I also feel like I enjoy musicals with a solid storyline better than this, which didn't seem like a story but an idea.

Hairspray (2007)

This has never been one of my favorite musicals.  Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy it and I've even seen this one on Broadway.  It's just not a favorite.  I enjoyed revisiting it this week though since like I said, it's not a favorite so it had been a while since I had seen it.

Fosse (2002)

It's been a few years since I've seen this, so I really enjoyed watching all the dancing.

Dirty Dancing (1987)

No summer is complete without this summer vacation movie.  It's great!  It has great dance scenes, a real storyline, and Patrick Swayze.  I mean really, how could you go wrong.

A Chorus Line (1985)

I'm surprised it's taken me so long to watch this one.  We actually used this theme song for my senior dance.  If I'm being completely honest, I was always a little bitter about it.  The senior group dance was always so pretty and emotional for the seniors.  My senior dance class however, ended up being fairly large with a wide range of ability.  So, we got this strange character piece that I'm pretty sure none of us liked.  And don't even get me started on the costumes.  I mean, obviously, it was exactly what you would expect if you'd ever seen this movie, but let's be real, none of us had or cared to at that time.  Even now, seeing that it was perfect for the dance, it's not something I would have chosen for a senior dance or costume.  Regardless of this memory, I did enjoy the movie.  I didn't extremely enjoy it, especially as a musical.  I mean, obviously, it's a musical, but not the style of musical that I love I guess.  It seemed more like a movie that just had music in it, instead of a musical.  I don't know, I guess I'm weird, but those are my thoughts on this one.

A Little Princess (1995)

I remember this one from when I was a kid.  By that, I mean, I remembered that it was a movie I liked, but I didn't really remember the movie itself.  If you've been following along, you know the random Shirley Temple movie I picked, was in fact this very movie.  I obviously knew both movies from being a kid, but I didn't remember that it was the same movie which makes me wonder, did I never realize that as a kid?  I don't know, but this was a good one too.

 Musical Monday - Billy Elliot (2008)

So, I watched this one on YouTube which means it wasn't great quality.  I'm sure it was fun to watch live, but I just wasn't feeling it during this viewing.  There were times that the audience would laugh when I wasn't able to hear the line so I know there was a lot I missed.

Tune Tuesday - 42nd Street (1933)

So, I guess I had never actually watched this show before, because this wasn't quite what I expected.  I enjoyed it, but for the amazing song 42nd Street is and the amount of times I've seen people use that song in dance, I guess I expected something grander.  In honesty, I didn't think it was that heavy on the musical aspect of the show.  I did enjoy the dancing scenes, but again, I think I expected even more than we were given.  If I'm being honest, I think I liked the train scene better than the title number.

Wayback Wednesday - Seven Samurai (1954)

This movie is on hold at the library, but I haven't gotten it yet.

Throwback Thursday - The Sandlot (1993)

So, I remember this as a kid, but I was never a huge fan.  After this viewing I stand by that fact.  It is a cute movie and it has some great quotable lines, but it's just not a favorite for me.

Friday First - Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

I have to admit that this movie really drew me in.  This wasn't one that I turned on and then was able to do something else while it just played in the background.  Instead, I was drawn in watching everything to make sure I didn't miss anything.  In fact, I was intrigued from the beginning.  For some reason though, when the ending came I had the feeling that I didn't like the movie.  Maybe it's how the movie ended, but I can't picture it ending any other way.  So maybe it's actually the age difference that I just find a little strange.  I'm not sure what exactly it was, but this one didn't sit right with me when it came down to it.

Seasonal Saturday - My Father the Hero (1994)

I remember this movie from when I was younger.   At that time, I thought this movie was so funny.  Watching it now as an adult, I found it a little stupid.  I did think it was interesting watching Katherine Heigl.  I didn't remember her in this movie, but of course this movie was before Grey's Anatomy so that makes sense.

Disney Dinner - Aladdin (1992)

So, we're still not having themed dinners, but we have at least seen this one recently.  In fact, this movie has been on LittleCJC's TV on repeat.  If you read one of my earlier update post, you may remember that her dance production is an Aladdin theme this year, so we've actually been watching this one all year long.  

Musical/Movie Project Week 20

 Musical Monday - Fame (1980)

I enjoyed watching this film again, but I realize nothing really happens in it.  Don't get me wrong, I liked all the dance and music scenes, but the movie itself is a little boring.

Tune Tuesday - Damn Yankees (1958)

I saw this musical when a local high school did this production years ago.  I'm not sure if that was when I first heard these songs or if I already knew a lot of them, but they are definitely familiar to me now.  The movie however, I really enjoyed.  Gwen Verdon is great as always and even though the plot line is a little of a stretch for me, I enjoyed the musical numbers, and let's be honest, Bob Fosse is a genius.

Wayback Wednesday - Vertigo (1958)

I'm not really sure about this one.  Overall, I think I'm going to say it's just not for me.  At first, I thought it was just a little slow and then a little intriguing.  Then there was an awesome discovery, but then it was a little strange taking things a little too far for me to get behind.  And then there's the ending.  Yes, I'm sticking with I'm just not a fan of this one.

Throwback Thursday - A League of their Own (1992)

I love this movie.  First of all, this movie has always been cool to me, because it was filmed here in my hometown.  Or at least some of it.  The little boy in the film was also a local boy that actually went to church with me.  I hadn't seen this one in a while so I really enjoyed watching it again.  It even brought some tears to my eyes.

Friday First - Blazing Saddles (1974)

I think I'm skipping this one for now.  Maybe I'll come back to it later, but I haven't gotten to it yet and I wanted to share my thoughts on the others before my posts start getting even further behind my viewings.

Seasonal Saturday - What a Girl Wants (2003)

I loved this movie when it came out.  Watching it now, I'm not really sure why.  It's cute, but it wasn't amazing.  I don't know, maybe I've just seen it too many times.  I always thought the guy that plays the love interest was so cute.  Maybe now that I'm older that's part of why this movie didn't appeal to me as much.

Disney Dinner - Big Hero 6 (2014)

Of course, we're still struggling to get back to these.

Musical/Movie Project Week 19

Musical Monday - Dreamgirls (2006)

This movie came out when I was in college.  The movie's good, but let's be honest, the soundtrack is where it's at.  Who doesn't want to belt out when this movie is on.

Tune Tuesday - Chicago (2002)

This is another one where you just can't help singing along.  I was in high school when this one came out and I drove around with this soundtrack on repeat.  I hadn't watched this in forever and I enjoyed it.  

Wayback Wednesday - A Clockwork Orange (1972)

Wow! I don't think I will ever watch this movie again.  However, I understand the appeal.  Anything that pushes the boundaries usually becomes popular, and this one definitely pushes boundaries.  In fact, I almost turned it off after the first few scenes and I admit to skipping forward at one point as well.  It did get better after those opening scenes, so I did manage to finish this one, and I'm happy I can finally say I've seen this one even if I didn't particularly enjoy it.

Throwback Thursday - Dazed and Confused (1993)

I remember watching this as a kid.  I didn't realize it was such a new movie when I saw it, but it must have been because I know exactly when I saw this one.  I was lucky enough to get to go on a ski vacation to Colorado with my cousins.  For some back story, my aunt has 5 boys and I'm the same age as the youngest.  This meant that the oldest boy was already in college when I went on this trip (when I was in 4th grade.)  I remember watching this movie with those older cousins.  I'm sure I missed a lot at that time, but considering what this movie became, I'm glad I can say that I saw this one before it was known as the one where Matthew McConaughley says "alright, alright, alright."

Friday First - Lost in Translation (2003)

So, I have to admit I didn't actually finish this one.  I stopped it for whatever reason (I'm sure something to do with one of my girls) and I honestly just couldn't get myself to hit play again.  I was so bored with the first hour of this movie.  I didn't find any of it funny and it just didn't move at all.

Seasonal Saturday - 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

I have always liked this movie and Julia Stiles.  It was fun watching it again since I hadn't seen it in such a long time.  Honestly, it set me up wanting to watch all the high school themed movies I remember from this time.

Musical/Movie Project Week 17

 Musical Monday - A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966)

Unfortunately, this movie apparently has gone missing from my local library.  So, maybe I'll just listen to the soundtrack, but I'm giving up for now so that I can get this post out.

Tune Tuesday -Sundays in the Park with George (1984)

I was introduced to this musical while I was in college and one of the local high schools put on this production.  I remember being impressed with the show.  Watching it now, I'm still impressed, although it's not a favorite of mine.  Both the music and the concept are interesting and I appreciate the different approach it takes, but for me, it's not a show I want to watch over and over.

Wayback Wednesday - Showboat (1951)

So, I didn't care much for the movie itself, but you can't deny the classic songs in this one.

Throwback Thursday - Jurassic Park (1993)

We love this movie in our house.  Both Patrick and I grew up watching this one and now our kids love it too.  This movie was brilliant when it was first released, and it has held up just fine.

Flashback Friday - The Princess Bride (1987)

I know, it's crazy that I have never seen this before.  I have to admit, it was better than I expected.  Most people love this movie, but let me explain why I never cared to watch it.  When I was a kid, we had the original Scene It game and one of the video clips was from this movie.  I know you're wondering what scene could it possibly be that would prevent me from watching this movie for so long?  It was the one where the witch runs around the room screaming Humperdinck.  I don't know if you would agree or not, but in my opinion, this is probably the silliest scene in the movie.  I'm happy to report, I enjoyed everything else, and in all honesty this scene wasn't even unbearable in context.

Seasonal Saturday - Apollo 13 (1995)

I hadn't seen this one in a long time and I enjoyed it.  This mission was before my time and I was never much of a space person, so I have no idea how close to the real mission this movie remained.  Either way, it's impressive what everyone went through both in space and at mission control.  Whether the movie portrayed the truth or not, it's a great movie.

Disney Dinner - The Jungle Book (1967)

Of course, I'm still struggling to get back to Disney dinners.  So, here's another week where that didn't happen.

Musical/Movie Project Week 16

 Musical Monday - Annie Get Your Gun (1950)

This was so much fun to watch.  I have always enjoyed so many of these songs, but I don't know if I had ever seen this movie before.  I'm pretty sure I watched a high school production of the show when I was a kid, but the movie was cute and Betty Hutton was great in this.

Tune Tuesday - The Secret Garden (1991)

So, I saw a community production of this when I was a kid.  My cousin worked on the set design so my whole family traveled to see the show and my cousin.  Honestly, besides remembering that I liked the show, the only detail I remember is that the bed had a secret compartment on the bottom where someone stayed on their belly the entire time to move the bed on and off the stage with their hands.  As a child, I found this hilarious.  I only listened to the soundtrack this time.  It was enjoyable but not exactly songs that are now stuck in my head or even really memorable for that matter.  I do think I would enjoy seeing this production again though if the opportunity were to arise.

So in my planning, I seemed to have a repeated this week's movie selection.  Since I've fallen so far behind and I'm playing catch-up, I decided to not fill it with anything else.

Throwback Thursday - Forrest Gump (1994)

I mean, come on, this is a classic now right?  This movie is so great the way it covers so many historic events.  Of course it's totally unrealistic that it could all happen to one guy, but what a guy for it to happen to.  It's pretty much perfect.

Friday First - The Big Lebowski (1998)

So, I understand that this is a big cult classic, but it's not my style.  I understand why it's popular.  In fact, it's a pretty impressive plot line.  However, I'm not big on these stupid humor movies full of foul language and repetitive lines.

Seasonal Saturday - Speed (1994)

This movie may have been one of the first R rated movies I watched as a kid.  I thought it was awesome back then and it didn't disappoint now 27 years later.  The perfect action movie with some great lines.

 Musical Monday - Hello Dolly (1969)

I thoroughly enjoyed this one.  I'm pretty sure I'd seen it before, but maybe not as an adult so there was a lot that I didn't remember.  I found it humorous and the musical numbers were great, especially "Put on Your Sunday Clothes."

Tune Tuesday - Heathers the Musical (2014)

This show seems so popular that I added it to my list.  I hadn't realized that it never actually made it to Broadway.  I understand, I didn't really care for it myself.  In complete honesty though, I only recently watched the 80s film, and I wasn't crazy about that either.  

Wayback Wednesday - On the Town (1949)

This was so fun!  I think I have seen this before, but it had been a long time.  This show is so energetic and cute.  The songs are fun and the storyline is enjoyable.

Throwback Thursday - My Girl (1991)

I grew up loving this movie.  However, I hadn't seen it in forever.  I was really enjoying it, until the movie stopped playing.  I get so frustrated with getting these movies from the library and my DVD player is way too sensitive.  It was one thing when I missed a scene or two, but then when it stopped playing a few scenes from the end it was torture.  I stand by this being a great movie though.

Friday First - Stand By Me (1986)

Ok, this one I get.  No, it's not one I will probably watch again any time soon, but I understand why it's so popular.  Once you get past the young boys being dumb boys, it was a pretty good movie.

Seasonal Saturday - Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)

Oh my.  So, as you know, I've been playing catch-up these first weeks of May since I pretty much missed the entire month of April.  In this instance, it actually worked in my favor.  My brother noticed that this movie was playing at our local theater on Mother's Day so the two of us took our mom and enjoyed this film.  I had such a great time, but lost way too many tears.  

Disney Dinner - Wall-E (2008)

Of course, we didn't have this Disney dinner, but I was just talking about this movie with LittleCJC so hopefully we'll watch it at some point soon since she didn't remember it at all.
